***************
Joe Mangrum began creating this unique form of sand painting in 2006. Rising from a tradition of ephemeral installations and permanent paintings, he began this distinctive series after observing many traditional techniques and applying a contemporary spin to his original works. He creates each sand painting spontaneously and pours the colored sand from his hand. He has created over 550 of his sand paintings in public spaces of New York City, in addition to The Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., Museum of Arts and Design, NYC, The Asia Society, NYC, The Rubin Museum, NYC and The FLAG Art
Foundation, NYC. His installations in ephemeral materials such as florals and found objects have been exhibited at the de Young Museum, San Francisco and various galleries in both San Francisco and NYC; Florence, Italy and Beijing, China.
In 2003, Joe was honored with the Lorenzo de Medici Award at the Florence Biennale for his mixed media installation, “Fragile.” He is a strong supporter of the environment and has worked with educational programs such as with the Ashé Cultural Center in New Orleans. He has also been featured on the PBS program SPARK on KQED and most recently was a guest on Sesame Street.
Joe is an alumnus of School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
