JUST JANET documents my exploration of my maternal lineage. In 2000 when my grandmother, Pauline, passed away it was discovered that my mother was adopted. Quickly afterwards, through the assistance of a private investigator, my mother was reconnected with her biological mother, Janet. Due to an estranged relationship with my mother, I have not given myself an opportunity to get to know Janet and her story. These photos are the beginning of our relationship and the navigation of me and my sister understanding our ancestral history. This series includes the struggle of an adopted child’s identity and skewed reality that is taking decades to sort out and bring healing to all persons involved.
